The northern region of Kerala may not be as endowed as southern parts of the state when it comes to misty hill stations that are ideal for trekking but there is one spot in Kozhikode that can take your breath away. Vayalada is a pristine place gifted with natural beauty and cocooned in lazy mist, and travellers had made this serene spot trending on social media.
This picturesque hilltop is about 12km away from Balussery in Kozhikode district. As Vayalada is 2,000ft above sea level, it has all the charm and serenity of a hill station and one can get a panoramic view of the Koorachundu and Perambra towns from the highest point.
Vayalada has earned the sobriquet ‘Kozhikode's Gavi’ after the famous hill station Gavi at Pathanamthitta district in south Kerala. Like Gavi, Vayalada has a nip in the air with mist all around and a rich touch of green. It is also a haven for trekkers as the place is dotted with hills and the highest one is the Kottakunnu hill. A trek to the viewpoint can never go down the drain as the sight of the Kakkayam dam and huge boulders is spellbinding. As the soft breeze rustles your hair after the strenuous hike, the feeling is surreal for sure.
One can reach Vayalada viewpoint via Balussery while coming from Kozhikode and through Estate Mukku from Thamarassery. Moreover, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has several services connecting Balussery with Vayalada.
Though Vayalada is a year-round destination, the hill station has a different hue and appeal during monsoon season. The rain and mist conjure up a magical treat for the visitors, and the sunrise and sunset are also equally beguiling from the viewpoint.
