After 25 years with the German record champions Bayern Munich, Thomas Mueller has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
"My 25 years as a player for FC Bayern Munich will come to an end this summer. It has been an incredible journey, marked by unique experiences, great encounters, and unforgettable triumphs. I feel enormous gratitude and joy that I have been able to pursue this career at my beloved club," he said.
The 35-year-old world champion, who has won a record 12 league titles with Bayern, will play his final match for the club during the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, scheduled from June 15 to July 13. "The German record champions will honor Mueller's outstanding career with, among other things, a farewell match," Bayern Munich said in a post on X.
Mueller has won numerous titles with the German club, including two trebles in the 2012-13 and 2019-20 seasons. His achievements include two Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, and six German Cups. He also played a key role in helping Germany win the 2014 World Cup.
It was not immediately clear which club Mueller will join after the season.
Mueller, considered as one of the greats of Bayern, saw his playing time sharply decline during the last few seasons. He said that the decision was made mutually, in the best interest of the club. He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support.
"The very special connection to the club and our fantastic fans will always remain," he said.
Mueller added that his focus for the rest of the season is to win back the Bundesliga title from Bayern Leverkusen and secure the coveted Champions League trophy. The UEFA Champions League final will be held at Bayern's home ground, the Allianz Arena, this season.
Bayern have a golden opportunity to win both the Champions League and domestic league titles this season. They are set to face Italian side Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals, while also aiming for another Bundesliga title, holding a 6-point lead over second-placed Leverkusen.
"What I wish for as I leave should be clear: titles that we can celebrate together and moments that we will all remember fondly for a long time to come. We will give our all in the coming weeks to bring the championship back to Munich and reach our long-awaited final at home. Let's tackle this together," he said.
