COVID-19: 34,199 cases in Kerala on Wednesday, active cases cross 1.6L

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala recorded 34,199 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday after testing 91,983 samples, taking its Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 37.17 per cent.
COVID fatalities reached 51,160, after 85 previously undocumented deaths and 49 recent ones were added to the list, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.
The active cases which were below the 1.5 lakh-mark from September 28, 2021 onwards, breached that level on Wednesday as a third wave of infections started spreading rapidly in the state. After 8,193 more recover from the infection, the number active patients in the state reached 1,68,383 Among them, only 3.2 per cent are admitted to hospitals currently.
The state has reported 54,64,457 cases so far. Of them, 52,44,206 recovered.
Of the positive cases, 283 were health workers, while 125 had come from outside the state and 33,195 infected through contact. The source of infection of 596 among them is unknown.
Omicron cases also rise
54 fresh cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus were also reported on Wednesday, and took the total affected by the variant to 645.
Out of the total 645 patients so far, 434 reached from low-risk countries while 107 came from high-risk nations.
A total of 80 people in the State contracted the disease through their contacts while 24 people came from other states

Vaccination and quarantine
Till Friday, 99.8 per cent (2,66,78,477) of the eligible adult population in Kerala has been given one dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 83 per cent (2,21,13,355) received both the doses.
As of now, a total of 2,91,945 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 2,85,742 are under home or institutional quarantine while 6,203 are in hospitals across the state. A total of 1,094 people were admitted in hospitals on Wednesday.
