Jishnu Pranoy, a first year student of Nehru Engineering College at Pambady, Thrissur, was found hanging in his hostel room on January 6, 2017.Thiruvilwamala: The Public Works Department (PWD) has demolished the memorial erected by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) in memory of Jishnu Pranoy, the engineering student who was found hanging in his hostel washroom last year.
The memorial, located at Pambadi, was dismantled by the PWD on the orders of the district collector on Friday morning in the presence of a massive police force.
Even though the district collector had ordered demolition of the structure much earlier, the action was delayed due to fears of violence.
Pranoy, a first-year student of Nehru Engineering College at Pambady, Thrissur, was found hanging in his hostel room on January 6, 2017. He was last seen around 6 pm on that fateful day and an hour earlier, he was summoned to the room of vice-principal KN Sakthivel.
The college authorities said that the young SFI activist had committed suicide after he was caught cheating in an examination. But the friends and kin of the deceased teenager alleged foul play and the investigation threw up several incriminating pieces of evidence including blood stains in the rooms of college authorities.
The death had led to a stormy protest in the college and forced the institution to shut down for several months. The college principal and several others were in police custody in the case.
Friday was the last date to carry out the order of demolition.
