Center gives nod, CBI to probe Jishnu Prannoy's death The student of Nehru College of Engineering in Thrissur committed suicide following alleged harassment by college authorities

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the death of Jishnu Prannoy, a Keralite engineering student who was found hanging in a college hostel in Thrissur. The Center has informed the apex court that the agency will probe the case.

However, the court criticized the CBI for refusing to take the up the case earlier, and causing a delay of five months that could have an impact on the probe.

Earlier, the CBI officials had written to the state government, citing excess workload for not taking up the case. The probe agency had also then said that the case did not warrant a CBI probe.

Jishnu Prannoy, a first year student of Nehru College of Engineering in Thrissur, was found hanging in the college hostel in January, following alleged harassment by college authorities.

The top court Tuesday was hearing a plea of the state government challenging the Kerala High Court order granting bail to accused Nehru Group chairman Krishnadas and college vice-principal N K Sakthivel. Jishnu's mother, Mahija, had also approached the SC, seeking a CBI probe into the case.

Jishnu parents, Ashokan and Mahija, expressed happiness over the SC order.
