I arrested Nisham and was suspended: the travails of being a Kerala cop Jacob Job said that his superior officer, who had accused him of acting against the rules, had been later debarred by the University.

Pathanamthitta: District police chief Jacob Job, who had arrested controversial businessman Mohammed Nisham in the Chandra Bose murder while serving in Thrissur, has come out with several revelations regarding the case. “While those who had extended special treatment to Nisham faced no action, I was given a suspension,” he said.

“Arresting Nisham was the proudest moment of my career. I knew that I would have to face the consequences for my action. But I did not realise that nobody would support me,” he said.

Jacob Job said that his superior officer, who had accused him of acting against the rules, had been later debarred by the University. He also said that though he had asked another police officer to go to Bengaluru to collect details of the cases against Nisham registered there, the officer concerned had refused to follow his orders. “Several complaints had been registered against Nisham before the Chandra Bose murder. However, nobody took any action. There were few officers in Thrissur who had not received kick-backs from Nisham,” said Jacob Job.

“If I too had accepted Nisham’s largesse, I would have had to burn all of it when demonetization was announced,” he added.

Raising further allegations against the then IG, Jacob Job said that even after sending a memo by e-mail to invoke Kerala Anti-social Activities Prevention Act (KAPPA) against Nisham, the IG had denied it. However, later, it was proved that the memo regarding KAPPA had indeed been sent.

“Nisham was arrested at night when the police received information that he was trying to flee abroad. From that day onwards, I began to receive threats. Other police officers also started to betray me. Finally, when KAPPA was invoked against Nisham, I was suspended,” said Jacob Job.

Jacob Job said that Nisham would have been granted bail if KAPPA had not been invoked.

The police officer said that he had no nexus with Nisham. “I met Nisham for the first time when I went to arrest him. Later, I met him two more times”, he said.

The police officer said that a big issue was made out of his questioning Nisham alone. Other officers who made lapses in the investigation were kept away, he pointed out. “I interrogated Nisham in my office, not at some secret place. Rules state that in such cases the district police chief himself should question the suspect,” Jacob Job explained.

He admitted that there was political interference in the case, but said that he could not reveal anything more at present. “I will describe everything in my book which will be published after retirement,” said Jacob Job, whose official service ends by March 31.
