Kochi: Controversial beedi tycoon Mohammed Nisham, serving term for killing a security guard, has been granted parole to visit his ailing mother.
Nisham can spend time with his mother at a flat in Kadavanthra from January 21-23. Nisham's wife had moved the court, seeking permission.
Nisham was brought to Ernakulam sub-jail on Sunday evening and was taken to the flat on Monday morning. He can spend time in the flat from 9 am - 5 pm and then return to the sub-jail. He is not allowed to use mobile phones or interact with anyone. Cops have been deployed to monitor his movements.
Nisham had crushed to death security guard Chandrabose with his luxury vehicle Hummer over delay in opening the gates of a posh residential complex in Thrissur on January 29, 2015. Nisham, who was in an inebriated state, had allegedly assaulted Chandrabose in a fit of rage. The guard succumbed to injuries on February 16.
The case had evoked widespread protests across the state.
The Kerala government had in 2016 ordered a probe into the allegation that Nisham was using mobile phone inside Kannur prison. The probe was ordered after the opposition alleged that Nisham had used mobile phones while in transit to Bengaluru for court appearance on October 20.
Three policemen who had accompanied him, had been suspended in this regard.
