car Nisham owns ten luxury cars: Representational image

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 1,178 luxury cars owned by people residing in Kerala were registered in Puducherry in a bid to evade tax running into several lakhs, it has been found.

A team of top officials from the motor vehicles department has left for Puducherry to make a detailed investigation.

The team will inquire about addresses provided for registration of the cars in the union territory where taxes are much lower compared to Kerala.

It is assumed that the addresses were fake, something the verification has to ascertain.

The team will also meet Puducherry transport commissioner and secretary.

The motor transport department has issued notices to owners of the cars, including actor-MP Suresh Gopi. If they do not provide satisfactory explanation, the department will register complaints with the police, so that action can be initiated to recover the tax mandated in the state as per revenue recovery rules.
