Bengaluru: ISRO marked a significant milestone on Thursday by successfully performing an in-space docking of satellites as part of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX).
"India docked its name in space history! Good Morning, India. ISRO's SpaDeX mission accomplishes historic docking success. Proud to witness this moment!" ISRO announced on its social media platform 'X'.
The mission, launched on December 30, 2024, saw two small satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), successfully docked in orbit. The PSLV C60 rocket carrying these satellites, along with 24 payloads, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, and deployed the satellites into a 475-km circular orbit about 15 minutes after launch, reported PTI.
Earlier, on January 12, ISRO conducted a trial by bringing the two spacecraft to a distance of three meters before moving them back to a safe position.
SpaDeX serves as a cost-effective technology demonstrator for in-space docking, a crucial capability for missions involving multiple launches to achieve shared objectives. The mission's success highlights ISRO's growing expertise in advancing space technologies.
