Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday launched a scheme which guarantees an amount of Rs 12,000 to each pregnant worker in tea gardens so that she can take better care of herself and her unborn baby.
Sonowal hoped that the initiative would help to considerably bring down the mortality rate among the pregnant women in the tea community.
He said diseases have been a major cause of worry and the mortality rate among pregnant women labourers in the tea gardens was on the higher side.
The workers will also be allowed maternity leave from the third trimester to the third month after pregnancy.
