Mounjaro and Ozempic: What is better for weight loss?

Mail This Article
Ever since the US pharma company Eli Lilly announced the launch of the weight loss drug Mounjaro in India, discussions on who can use it, how to avail of it, and its effects have been rife on various platforms. From 'What lets you enjoy carbs without consequence' to 'What can my purse afford, long term,' questions on their effectiveness have been coming up in various forms on social media, too. Both the drugs require a doctor's prescription, dose increase over time, and aren't FDA-approved for weight loss yet.
They also experience shortages worldwide due to the high demand. They are only approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes, but doctors are still allowed to prescribe them for weight loss, as per reports. However, on what is more effective for weight loss, here's what experts say:
Which one should you pick?
In conversation with a national online platform, Dr Jagadish Hiremath, a Pune-based public health expert, said that Ozempic and Mounjaro have their own benefits. However, Mounjaro is apparently a better pick for weight loss as it controls blood sugar better than Ozempic. The users can apparently lose up to 20% of their body mass with Mounjaro. Ozempic can also reduce weight by only around 15%, but the risk of cardiovascular disease is lower.
Both have side effects of nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Drugwatch.com, a legal portal specialising in medical issues, also says that Mounjaro is more effective for weight loss, according to various studies. In the clinical trials of Eli Lilly, participants lost from 12 to 25 pounds using Mounjaro, and Novo Nordisk's trials found weight loss of 9.31 to 14.1 in their trials. Regardless, the effectiveness of the medication can still depend on the individual needs and health condition.
