As Kerala inches towards extremely hot days, sunscreen has become as important as umbrellas, water bottles and the right clothing when you head out. However, applying any sunscreen cream without following the right indications will not help you. You should understand their classification, sun protection factor, and effects on your skin to get the right benefits. Here's how to go about it:
1) Which sunscreen is right for you?
After taking your dermatologist's advice, pick the right sunscreen for your skin. Going by the current weather pattern, you can ask for a lightweight, gel-based or water-resistant sunscreen, depending on what works best on your skin in humid conditions. Creams with a high sun protection factor or SPF (Above 50) should be effective.

2) Apply at the right time
Dabbing the cream on just before heading out will not help. Experts say sunscreen takes at least 15 minutes to get absorbed into your skin enough to protect you. Therefore, make sure you apply the cream early enough for maximum protection.
3) Apply on all exposed parts
Applying just on your face and neck might not help. Make sure that the right amount, based on the type of your sunscreen, is applied on all exposed parts, including ears, back of your neck,  feet,  and hands. If any area is hard to reach, spray sunscreen if it suits your skin. Those with thinning hairs can also apply on the scalp. Pick lip balms with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your lips. Mayo Clinic says to apply at least one ounce of sunscreen for a good effect.

4) Reapplication is essential
Whether you sweat often or not, reapplying the sunscreen every two or three hours after washing your face gently is essential. This is important even if you are indoors or it's a cloudy day.
5) Can kids use them?
According to the Mayo Clinic, sunscreen can be safely applied to six months or older kids. However, if you want to be doubly sure, check with your doctor. There are also sunscreens specifically labelled for children.
6) Sunscreen alone isn't enough
Even when applying sunscreen right, wear caps, sunglasses, full-sleeved clothing, umbrellas, and other protective measures to stay safe from harsh summer weather conditions.
