Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons. Every year, the symptoms begin to show and end at about the same time. SAD is commonly seen in people who live in places where all six seasons are experienced. The Cleaveland Clinic says that around 5% of people suffer the symptoms of SAD in America. These symptoms are mostly seen in people between 18 and 30 years. Besides, women are more likely to get affected by SAD than men. These are some of the effective methods to control the symptoms of SAD:
Sun exposure
Sunlight can regulate the serotonin hormone level, which helps improve your mood. Spending time outdoors, especially in the morning, is effective. Sitting near the window at your home or office too could be helpful.
Light therapy
Light therapy is as effective as getting sunlight to reduce the symptoms of SAD. You could use a light box for up to 20 – 30 minutes every morning, impacting the circadian rhythm, making you sharp and reducing depression.
Be active
Exercising or being active produces endorphin hormone, reducing stress and improving mood. Even light exercises like walking and stretching could reduce the symptoms of SAD. Make sure to exercise for half an hour outdoors at least a few times a week. This helps you get the benefits of working out and sun exposure.
Follow a routine
A proper routine could improve mood, regulate sleep cycles and boost energy. You should sleep and wake up at the same time every day, including the weekends.
Healthy diet
Food can influence a person's mood and energy levels. A well-balanced diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains and protein could nourish your body and mind. Sugar and caffeine should be controlled as these could lower your energy levels and lead to severe mood swings.
