An aromatic mid-day meal wrapped in banana leaves is always a nostalgic memory for Malayalis. The special aroma wafts through the air as soon as the lunch packet of rice and curries wrapped in the blanched banana leaf is opened. The aroma alone is almost enough to satisfy the hunger. In the past, banana trees were plentiful in the yard or field of most Kerala homes, ensuring an abundant supply of banana leaves. People going on long journeys used to rely on meals wrapped in banana leaves, as they remained fresh for a long time. However, today, the situation has changed. With the scarcity of banana trees in urban and other areas, hoteliers have begun cashing in on the Malayalis’ nostalgia for meals wrapped in banana leaves. Regardless, do you know the health benefits of eating meals wrapped in banana leaves?

What's with the aroma?
Banana leaves have a waxy coating. This is what gives off the unique aroma when hot food is wrapped in it. This coating also prevents the leaf from absorbing the oil from foods and juicy curries and thus getting soggy. Banana leaves contain many compounds that are beneficial for health, including polyphenols, chlorophyll, lignin, hemicellulose, proteins, vitamin A, calcium, carotene, and citric acid. The compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is found in green tea, is also present in banana leaves. It is a natural antioxidant that helps fight free radicals in the body and prevent disease. The hot food on the leaf absorbs these nutrients, providing nourishment to those who consume the wrapped meal.

The anti-cancer properties
The antioxidants in banana leaves also have anti-cancer properties. An enzyme called polyphenol oxidase in the leaves produces L-DOPA, which is used to treat Parkinson's disease. EGCG also helps prevent diabetes. Banana leaves possess the ability to fight various pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses. The chlorophyll in the leaves is also beneficial in preventing intestinal ulcers and skin diseases. Additionally, EGCG helps prevent atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and premature aging. The components of banana leaves can purify the blood and prevent urinary diseases as well.
