Dr. Vinod and his wife Roshni, both natives of Thiruvananthapuram, have been settled in Kozhikode for years, owing to their respective professions. Vinod is a clinical psychologist at the Kuthiravattam mental hospital. The couple is excited to talk about their brand new house in Kozhikode, Kerala.
The duo decided to build a house of their own when they got bored of living in rented homes. “Both of us are regular readers of Manorama Online. We contacted designer Sajeendran after we liked a project that we read about in this feature. We spent almost a year looking for the perfect plot. We liked the 3.75 cents plot near the Kozhikode medical college after seeing around 15 plots in and around the city. We then purchased the land and began the construction soon,” says Dr. Vinod.
The couple wished for a modern abode that smartly overcomes the spatial challenges posed by the small plot. They wanted a spacious car porch where at least two vehicles could be parked at a time. Besides, they needed a consultation room, enough utility spaces in each area and a handfull of other requirements as well. Designer Sajeendran deserves credit for designing such a stunning house by meeting all the demands of the family members.
The elevation features the flat roof – box style to save space. The elegant charm of the lighter shades of hues could be seen both inside and outside the house. The laterite cladding and the artificial cladding are the highlights of the outer walls. Huge windows are installed on the exterior walls to let lots of natural sun shine and air into the house.
The car porch, done in industrial work, is projected from the façade. Meanwhile, polycarbonate sheet is paved as the roof here. A layer of white ceiling beneath this completes the look of the car porch. A sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, three bedrooms, a consultation room, study area, utility space, balcony and an open terrace too have been arranged in this amazing house that is designed in 1500 sq ft area.
The interiors are designed in the open style by avoiding unnecessary walls or partitions. So, lots of beams had to be installed while building the structure. These beams, meanwhile, have been adorned with veneer and plywood paneling to make it an attractive design element.
Vitrified tiles in white colour are paved on the floor in the house. Meanwhile, granite is paved on the steps of the stairway. The kitchen is highlighted using wooden finish tiles.
The living and the dining areas are arranged in the open style. An elegant L-shaped leather couch is what adorns the living area. The four – seater dining table, meanwhile, looks classy and chic.
The stair area has a pergola ceiling in double height. Lots of natural sunshine enter the house through this pergola. A small area beneath the stairway has been separated into a consultation room. The wall beside the stairway is decorated with attractive wall paper.
The kitchen cabinets are done in multi wood finish. The counter top, meanwhile, has been paved with granite. The concealed refrigerator saves a lot of space in the kitchen.
The three bedrooms are bath-attached and have in-built wardrobes as well.
Utility and study spaces are arranged in the upper floor. The open terrace too could be used as a multipurpose space where small parties could be hosted or to grow a beautiful terrace garden. Besides, one could enjoy the panoramic view of the vibrant city from the terrace.
The construction of the fabulous abode, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a budget of Rs 40 lakh. Vinod and Roshni are joyous that their dream of owning a house of their own has been fulfilled. The housewarming ceremony of the house was celebrated last month. The couple says they feel pride when their friends and relative shower praises on their brand new house.
