Saidalavi, a businessman, is proud to show around his brand new house at Ozhoor in Malappuram district, Kerala. He had bought 20 cents of land along with an old single storey house and had converted it into his dream dwelling. He gave the house a modern makeover as the interiors were congested and lacked enough supply of natural light and air. Now, the house dons a modern and chic look.
The plot is around 20 feet below the road level. The roofing is done in multiple levels so that the house looks tall and majestic from outside. Besides, the new elevation faces the main road. The stylish slits on the wall above the sit-out is the highlight of the exteriors. More than a design element, these slits brings in lots of natural sunshine into the interiors. The front yard is paved with baby mettle that allows the water to seep into the ground. Lots of trees and plants adorn the tastefully done landscape.
The show wall with laterite claddings and kota stone highlights instantly draws attention. The newly extended sit-out and car porch makes the façade prominent and easily noticeable. Two bedrooms have been added in the upper floor. The sit-out here exudes the rustic charm of the brick cladding.
The renovated structure has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, four bedrooms, kitchen, upper living area and a balcony. Old flooring has been replaced with classy marble in the ground floor and marbonite in the upper storey.
The interiors have been rearranged in the semi-open style to make the spaces vaster and roomy. Huge windows and glass doors too have been newly installed to naturally illuminate the spaces. It makes the interiors look extremely spacious and ensures excellent cross ventilation as well.
The dining area got rearranged with a double-height roof. One could easily catch a glimpse of this space from the upper storey. Arranging the wash area beneath the stairway is an excellent example of efficient space management in this house.
Furnishing is done in simple and minimal style. Old timber has been used to make the furniture pieces. Meanwhile, the kitchen cabinets and the wardrobes in the rooms are done in aluminum composite panels. All these factors had significantly helped in reducing the expenses.
The old bedrooms got extensions to make them spacious. Besides, attached bathrooms and in-built wardrobes too have been newly added in these rooms.
The old kitchen was crammed and wasn’t very comfortable. Now, the kitchen is spacious and has all the modern facilities. The main kitchen and the adjacent work area have now become part of the spacious hall. The most interesting highlight is that the renovation of this beautiful house, that has an area of 2300 sqft, was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 25 lakh.
