Aji, a native of Nedumbram, Thiruvalla, Kerala, owned a 6 cents plot here, which didn't have any particular shape or structure. A road runs in front of this plot. Aji was skeptical about constructing a house on this plot. Although he approached many architects to design a house, none showed any interest. In the end, it was architect Anoop Kumar who took up the challenge of designing a beautiful house on this plot.
The family was very particular that there should be no space crunch in the house. When the construction was over the meticulous design of the house make anyone forget that it was built on such a small plot. Flat roof dominates the elevation to make use of the spaces. A high - slanting roof right in the center is a striking feature which adds a chic look to the exteriors. It could be used as a utility space as well. The water tank too is installed here.
The gate is made by doing CNC cutting on multi-wood. The car porch is built away from the main structure as the family wanted to have some front yard. It is quite unique that the beams aren’t installed in the sit-out. This 2000 sq ft charming house has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen, courtyard and four bedrooms. The interiors, designed in the open style, make the spaces look vast and spacious.
The living area and a TV unit are arranged right beside the entrance. A simple dining table completes the adjacent dining area. The prayer space is arranged on a wall here. Vitrified tiles, in matte finish, are paved on the floor in all the main areas. Tiles in wooden finish are used on the bedroom floor. The panelling and false ceiling done in plywood, veneer and gypsum finish and the stylish light fittings enhance the pleasant look of the interiors.
The handrails of the stairway are made of mild steel with wood covering. The ceiling here is in double height. A courtyard, paved with artificial grass, is arranged beneath the stairway. A hanging cot too has been arranged here as per the wishes of the family.
The natural stone cladding that highlights the exterior wall is repeated on the wall beside the stairway as well.
The bedrooms are vast with attached bathrooms, wardrobe facilities and separate dressing spaces. The spacious kitchen has cupboards done in marine plywood and laminate finish. Granite is paved on the counter tops. A small breakfast counter completes the beautiful kitchen.
This house is a fine example of building a beautiful house on a plot that is spatially challenging.
