Landscaping is the highlight of the 3,700 sq ft house on a 40-cent plot belonging to Jins, a non-resident Keralite, at Kolenchery in Ernakulam district.
A good portion of the premises is set apart for a garden where trees and shrubs grow in abundance. From the main road, a tree-lined path leads to the porch. The porch is reached after a slight curve along the path and the walls near the porch are curved too.
The outer walls have been decorated with cladding tiles, which are seen on the curved wall also.
The exterior of the house has been given a traditional appearance, while the interior flaunts several modern facilities. Roof tiles were fixed on MS frame. The roofing is in several levels. Facilities for two storeys are available inside the house, thanks to Mezzanine style. Glass doors have been designed on several sides of the house to enjoy the greenery outside.
The furniture is designed according to the interior theme. Vitrified tiles are laid at the main areas of the house. To provide contrast, wooden laminate flooring has been provided.
The drawing room is separated by laying wooden tiles. A wall in the room has been highlighted by giving texture finish.
The house has several other design improvisations. One among them is the dining table. It has chairs to seat people on one side and a bench on the other. The dining area and family living room are part of the open hall. The central courtyard has been arranged in between this area and light profusely enters through Skylight.
From the family living room, one can reach the patio outside. Sliding glass doors are fixed here.
There are three bedrooms in the house which have large windows enabling a clear view to enjoy the greenery on the premises. While there are attached bathrooms, the kitchen has basic facilities.
The house has a loft space on the Mezzanine floor from where the lower courtyard can be observed.
Lighting is not needed inside the house during daytime as natural light steadily streams in. Fan and AC too can be avoided as breeze reaches all parts of the house due to cross ventilation.
A cold weather surrounds you as soon as you enter the house. What distinguishes the house from others is the landscaping done on the premises which gives stress on greenery and nature.
