The traditional oil lamp is considered the symbol of prosperity. Lighting an oil lamp can make a difference in your house.

The base of the lamp represents Brahma, while the stem represents Vishnu and the top represents Siva. The flame stands for Lakshmi and the light stands for Saraswathi. The warmth of the flame signifies Parvathi. In other words, the oil lamp is holiness personified.

Any impurities in the lamp is believed to affect the entire family. You have to be clean when you light the lamp in the morning and evening.

Some people believe that skipping the lighting of the lamp even for a day is a bad omen. It is better not to start the practice than forgetting to light it, some others say.
