Delicious fish dishes have always been part of Keralites’ food nostalgia. There are fewer homes where there isn’t a fish dish for lunch. From a simple fish curry to fancy fish fries or 'meen peera' (small fishes cooked in grated coconut and spices), Malayali cannot have rice without fish. Fish perattu is a flavoursome dish to try in case you are bored of eating the same old fish curries. It is extremely tasty and is easy to prepare as well. Ingredients
20 fish fillets
1 small piece of ginger
10 cloves garlic
1 tomato
1 onion
Curry leaves
1 ½ tbsp rice flour
¼ tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp + 1 ½ tbsp chili powder
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp pepper powder
1 tomato
3 green chillies
1 ½ tbsp vinegar
Salt as required
Oil as required
2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
Preparation
Prepare a marinade by mixing ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, 1 tsp chilli powder, salt, crushed pepper and rice flour in some water
Marinate the fish fillets with this paste and keep them aside for at least 15 minutes
After some time, fry the marinated fish
Heat the same oil in another pan and splutter the mustard seeds
Sauté the onion slices, ginger, garlic cloves and curry leaves
Add the tomato when the onion is brown in colour
Sauté well
Into it add 1 ½ tbsp chilli powder
Sauté until the raw smell of the chilli powder is gone
Pour 2 cups water
Mix well and cook with the lid on
Add the vinegar when the water reduces to half
Now add the fried fishes
Cook on low flame until the rest of the gravy to is reduced
Enjoy the fish perattu with rice, chapathi or roti.
