The newly released song ‘Freak Penne’ from the forth coming movie ‘Oru Adaar Love’ is garnering dislikes on YouTube. Within just hours of its release, around 2 lakh viewers have pressed the dislike icon for this song. Interestingly, more than 10 lakh viewers have already watched this fast number. Debutant singer Satyajith who wrote and sang this song, however, sees these dislikes as ‘likes’. Sathyajith speaks to Onmanorama about the song which is currently trending number one on YouTube.

Cinema dream

Satyajith has been dreaming of movies from childhood itself. At college, cinema became his passion, or rather, as the youngster confesses, it became a craze. He has been writing songs for the last 6 years, and the album song ‘Plus Twokari Penne’ which Satyajith wrote, was hit on the social media. He got his big break into the movies after his album song became viral. The movie’s director Omar Lulu, who watched the video song, called him up and offered him the opportunity to pen the lines of the song. “Omar Lulu realized the flair of an artist and invited me to write the song without even conducting an audition. He is a good film maker who recognizes our creativity. In fact my dream had come true with this song,” says Satyajith.

Satyajith says that he had written the song ‘freak Penne’ some time ago. However, he never got the opportunity to release it until now. He admits that he had penned this song with the intention to use it in a movie. He had then composed the song along with Shaan Rahman, for ‘Oru Adaar Love.'

Dislikes are likes

“I honestly see these ‘dislikes’ as positive, because people would talk about it at least to criticize, and then more people would watch it. Until now I was someone who was limited to just a mobile video. I am happy that my song is now watched by millions of people. So I would like to consider these dislikes as ‘likes’,” notes Satyajith.

He says that many criticize him by comparing the lines of the song with of the ones written by legendary lyricist and poet Vayalar Rama Varma. “The director demanded a peppy number which would match the visuals, which was playful and celebratory, of the song. The words written would be almost the same whether it’s a melody or a fun song. We would just jumble them up to suit the situation. But this time I have tried something new. I wrote this song by including the words which are used by us every day. There are people who liked it and there are also those who didn’t. This is my experimental work in Malayalam cinema. If the audience does not like it, then I would definitely try to be better in my next movie,” says the young musician.

Intentional dislikes?

Satyajith observes that the Malayali audience has accepted Jasi Gift’s super hit song ‘Lajjawathiye’ which was experimental. He says that the people have pre conceived notions about everything and they wouldn’t accept a song if it doesn’t fit into their idea of lyrics or music. He adds that those who have negative opinions about the song too could call him and convey their displeasure. Satyajith, however, points out that those who criticize the song are not ready to show themselves. “Those who speak against the song are still in hiding. I even doubt whether there is a conscious effort to malign this song. But I can’t say for sure. It may be because of the people’s inability to accept anything new or different. However, we can succeed only with the support of the audience. So I can’t say an opinion about it now,” remarks Satyajith.

Satyajith admits that though he loved to sing, he didn’t have the confidence to sing in front of a music director. He credits music composer Shaan Rahman for giving him the confidence to sing the song as well. “It was Shaan Rahman who gave me the courage to try my hands in singing. He invited me to his studio just like he would call a professional singer. I am grateful to Shaan Rahman for making me a confident singer,” concludes Satyajith.
