BMRC’s Airport Metro Project progressing rapidly; coaches to arrive in December

Bengaluru: The city dwellers have been waiting for the mega metro rail project to give them direct access to the airport terminal, beating the infamous Bengaluru traffic. The BMRC, meanwhile, is hopeful that the project will be completed by next year. The KR Puram – Airport (38.44 km) and Silk Board – KR Puram (19.75 km) routes would connect the city to Devanahalli in the Bengaluru rural. Over 50 per cent of the construction works on these routes have been completed. Meanwhile, the authorities plan to begin service between Hebbal and the Airport by June – September next year. Besides, the Hebbal – KR Puram corridor will be opened only in December 2026; the Silk Board – KR Puram route might be launched along with this.
Coaches arrive in December
The Bharat Earth Movers (BEML) noted that the coaches for the metro trains on these routes will be delivered from December onwards. The train will have six coaches with all the modern facilities, including luggage racks.
KR Puram – Airport
The construction between Hebbal and Airport is progressing rapidly by dividing the 17 stations in the route into three zones. The 2-kilometre-long stretch of tracks from the Airport is completed. Meanwhile, the construction of the two stations in the airport is overseen by the Bengaluru Airport Authority. These stations will boast of international standards and modern facilities.
However, the construction of the Chikkajala and Bettahalsur stations, which were declared part of the project, hasn’t begun yet. Embassy Group, which had earlier vowed to cooperate with the construction, had backed out of the project, jeopardising the chances of the Bettahalsur station. Meanwhile, the construction of Chikkajala station, which was included due to the demand of the people in the locality, got stalled after it was pointed out that it might soar the construction cost. The BMRC authorities indicate that these stations will likely be dropped from the project.
KR Puram, Kasturinagar, Horamavu, HRBR Layout, Kalyan Nagar, HBR Layout, Nagavara, Veerannapalaya, Kempapura, Hebbal, Kodigehalli, Jakkur Cross, Yelahanka, Bagalur Cross, Doddajala, Airport City and KIAL Terminals are the stations that are part of these routes.
Silk Board – KR Puram
The construction of the stations and the pillars in this route is expected to relieve the traffic congestion in the Outer Ring Road is progressing swiftly. Meanwhile, the bridge above the railway track in Doddanekundi has been completed. The skywalk near the Belanthur Eco Space tech park has also been dismantled for the project.
Meanwhile, this route will give Electronic City, which is the IT hub of Bengaluru, direct access to the Airport. Silk Board, HSR Layout, Agara, Ibluru, Belanthur, Kadubeesanahalli, Kodibeesanahalli, Marathahalli, ISRO, Doddenakundi, DRDO Sports Complex, Mahadevapura and KR Pura are the 13 stations in this route.
Aero - India delays construction
The construction of the metro rail project in the one-kilometre stretch near the Air Force Station in Yelahanka has been temporarily stopped due to Aero – India 2025. The work that was stalled, citing technical difficulties, will resume on February 16.
