Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1, 2025, and it is expected to prioritise railways with major allocations and big-ticket projects for upcoming years. According to experts, station development projects, new corridors, modern trains, bullet train projects, and projects to enhance other rail infrastructure are expected. A few of the expected project announcements include the following:
1) Expansion of the kavach safety system
2) More of Vande Bharat Expresses and bullet trains
3) Expansion of the freight corridor to boost economy
4) Projects to reduce carbon emissions through green railways and electrification projects
5) Upgrading of railway stations through the Amrit Bharat 2.0 projects
In the year 2023-24, the highest-ever allocation of Rs 2.4 lakh crore was earmarked for the railways. This year, experts expect an 18% hike for the railways. A big order of wagons, with the delivery date set around 2028-29, is also expected to be part of this budget. Meanwhile, the railway employees also hope that the authorities will include new-age tech initiatives in the interest of employees and passengers as part of the budget. They also hoped the government would include more technical staff in various departments, such as locomotives and signalling, to ensure their smooth functioning. Last year, the government allocated around Rs 1.08 lakh crore to deploy the Kavach safety system.
