Kumarakam: Aymanam panchayat in Kottayam district has been setting a perfect model for viable and practical plastic disposal methods in the places that are known for their tourism sector. The panchayat is all set to get rid of plastic waste from the lakes and rivers which are often chosen by the tourists to enjoy boat rides.
The cleaning drive is part of the Malinya Mukta Keralam (garbage-free Kerala) project that aims to keep the streets clean. The project is executed in association with the Haritha Karma Sena, Kudumbasree, MGNREGA labourers and the public too.
The lakes in the twenty wards of the panchayat would be cleaned by removing plastic bottles and other garbage. Millions of plastic bottles flowed from the Meenachil River into the smaller lakes, via its tributaries, during the deluge in 2018.
The panchayat has designed such a project to eradicate the harmful effects of plastic waste.
The plastic bottles that are collected as part of the cleaning drive would be handed over to the Clean Kerala company. Meanwhile, the plastic waste in the Koduvathra – Ayiraveli region in the first ward of the panchayat was removed by the Haritha Karma Sena members, Kudumbasree members, MGNREGA labourers and common people. The plastic collection drive conducted at Kareemadom – Ayiraveli – Chirayil areas got noticed due to its incredible participation from the general public. The drive was inaugurated by panchayat president Viji Rajesh.
