Balaram belonged to the golden generation of Indian football in the 1950s and 60s where he paired with legends such as Chuni Goswami and P K Banerjee, and they came to be known as 'holy trinity'.
The charming forward, known for his good looks, serpentine runs and ability to dribble past a maze of defenders, was also an able all-rounder for the Bengal cricket team, twice leading them to the Ranji Trophy final.
Goswami was captain of the 1962 Asian Games gold-medal winning team and had also represented Bengal in the first-class cricket tournaments.
