The SC bench was hearing applications filed by the Union Ministry of Environment and various State Governments seeking relaxations in the 1 km buffer zone.
The effort of the State Government is to obtain an exemption in the restrictions in place on thickly populated regions of buffer zones.
The apex court observed while considering the application filed by the Central government seeking a change in the buffer zone judgment and Kerala's plea seeking relief.
According to government officials, the report would help Kerala explain to the court the practical difficulties in declaring a one-km buffer zone around protected forests
This is in addition to 49,330 constructions identified in the satellite survey conducted by the Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre. Thus, the total constructions identified come to 70,582.
