India’s population to peak in early 2060s to 1.7 billion, says UN report
According to the report, India's population in 2024 is projected at 1.45 billion and this will peak to 1.69 billion in 2054. After this, it is projected to decline to 1.5 billion by the end of the century in 2100.
A working paper by EAC-PM said the share of the Hindu population decreased by 7.82% between 1950 and 2015 in India, while that of Muslims increased by 43.15%.
According to experts, the reasons for population decline range from declining fertility rates to social and cultural changes.
At the start of 2024, 4.3 births and two deaths are expected worldwide every second, according to the Census Bureau figures.
While there were 16 births for every 1,000 people 10 years ago, the figure is only 12 births at present.
