Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets rolled back the years to produce a goal for Inter Miami in the Champions Cup against Sporting Kansas City on Thursday. Busquets assisted Messi’s 56th-minute winner in adverse weather conditions in Kansas. Messi and Busquets were teammates at Spanish giants Barcelona, with whom they had years of success.

Midfielder Busquets sent a diagonal ball into the box from close to the centre circle. Messi chested it down gracefully before taking a touch to turn away from at least three Kansas defenders.

The Argentine striker scored at the far post with a calm placement using his weaker right foot. Messi was making his Champions Cup debut for the Miami side.

The Champions Cup, organised by the North American football federation CONCACAF, was formerly known as the Champions League. It is an annual continental tournament for clubs in North, Central, and Caribbean America.

The match originally scheduled for Tuesday had been postponed due to heavy snowfall after the United States National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the region. CONCACAF had postponed the match due to the possibility of snow accumulating on the pitch.

Messi’s Argentina and Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano is the head coach of Inter Miami. The match also marked Mascherano’s debut in the Champions Cup. Inter Miami will host the return leg on February 25, and the winners will face Jamaica's Cavalier.
