New Delhi: Arundhati Katju and Menaka Guruswamy, who led the legal battle for LGBTQ rights in India, has featured in the TIME magazine's list of 100 most influential people, released on Wednesday.
The landmark judgment by Supreme Court that struck down obsolete Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalised homosexuality, was the outcome of a long-term campaign led by two public-interest litigators, Arundhati and Menaka.
Writing for TIME, actress Priyanka Chopra says, ''Arundhati and Menaka became beacons of hope for the Indian LGBTQ+ community.''
The 'Time 100 Most Influential People 2019' named the world's most influential pioneers, leaders, titans, artists and icons of the year, and Reliance Industries (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani was named among the Most Influential Titans.
The list includes US President Donald Trump, Pope Francis, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Indian-American comedian Hasan Minhaj.
In the TIME 100 profile for Ambani, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra wrote that Ambani's vision is more ambitious than that of the father whose blessings he unfailingly invokes at the launch of each initiative.
