Eli lilly weight loss drug launched in India: Price, benefits and side effects

Mounjaro, an injectable drug that is used to treat weight gain, type 2 diabetes and obesity, has been launched in India. The drug is introduced here by US-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company, which specialises in medications for diabetes, cancer and more. The medicine, which was launched first in the US for type 2 diabetes treatment in 2022, was approved as a weight loss drug in 2023. It is similar to the weight loss drug ozempic that targets the Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) hormone, which regulates appetite and blood sugar. Mounjaro also targets the Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP) hormone, which regulates metabolism. Various reports claim that it's more effective to target both GLP AND GIP together for weight loss rather than just GLP. The medicine costs Rs 3,500 for 2.5 mg and Rs 4,375 for 5 mg. It's a prescription drug and is to be taken once a week.
How it helps
The manufacturers claim that mounjaro makes users feel full for longer, reducing calorie intake. It also slows digestion, improves fat metabolism, lowers glucose spikes, reduces fat storage and can eventually help lose up to 22% of body weight. Medical News Today says that the medicine can take some time to reach peak levels in the user's blood and also a while to leave their system. It starts to work within a few hours of the first injection. It doesn't guarantee a specific amount of weight loss per week, but long-term use of the drug can apparently result in significant weight loss.
Mounjaro side effects
The medicine can cause mild side effects like diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal swelling, acid reflex, flatulence, burping, indigestion, and constipation. However, if the safety precautions aren't followed as advised by your doctor, it can also cause serious side effects. These include kidney injury, pancreatitis, thyroid cancer, severe allergic reactions, and digestive problems.
