How much does a glass of lime juice cost in Kerala? This humble beverage becomes a hot commodity across the state as summer arrives, leading to a surge in lime prices every year. Exploiting this demand, certain eateries and vendors are charging unreasonable prices for simple lime drinks. One such incident made headlines on April 4, when a deputy tehsildar lodged a complaint against a bakery in Kottarakkara, Kollam.

The official submitted the complaint to the Kollam District Supply Officer along with a copy of the bill, showing a charge of Rs 48 for a glass of lime juice.

With the onset of summer, the demand for limes skyrockets in Kerala. Known for their refreshing taste and high vitamin C content, limes are favoured for beverages, cooking, and traditional remedies during the hot months.

According to market rates, the retail price of a kilogram of key lime ranges from Rs 80 to 100 across Kerala, as of April 5. In 2019, during the peak of summer, 1kg of key lime was priced at Rs 200-220.

Exploiting the situation, some roadside vendors are selling lime juices for prices ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 50! Meanwhile, restaurants and cafes are charging even higher, with some listing a glass of lime juice at Rs 80 on their menus!

While the refreshing beverage remains a popular choice among consumers seeking respite from the heat, the exploitation of this demand by certain vendors and eateries raises concerns about fair pricing practices.
