Veteran lyricist Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan, known for penning the lyrics for some of Mollywood's earliest classical hits, is no more. The Kuttanad-born lyricist and poet passed away at a private hospital in Kochi on Monday, leaving behind a huge legacy. As Malayalis mourn his death, we take a look at some of his best-written songs.

'Laksharchana Kandu Madangumbol'

This song written by Mamkombu for the Malayalam movie 'Ayalathe Sundari', which was directed by veteran filmmaker Hariharan, remains one of Mamkombu's most remembered works to date. The romantic melody was rendered by K J Yesudas and celebrates young love. Mamkombu once admitted that the words for the song were inspired by his own personal experience.

'Karinthol'

Karinthol, the power-packed energetic Malayalam song, was the dubbed version of the Oscar-winning Telugu song 'Naatu Naatu' from the movie. 'Naatu Naatu' was originally written by Chandrabose. The lyrics of Karinthol was equally impressive and retained the flavour of the original.
