Mumbai: The upcoming airline, Air Kerala, has announced plans to launch operations by June 2025, with its inaugural flight departing from Kannur International Airport (KIAL).
The airline, which has already appointed key personnel, including a CEO and CFO, recently signed an agreement with KIAL to commence regional flight services. As per the agreement, Air Kerala will initially operate several flights from Kannur to domestic destinations within a 90-minute flying range, reported PTI.
Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmed highlighted Kannur Airport's strategic role in the airline's operations, stating, "We take this opportunity to announce that Kannur International Airport will be a major player in our operational strategy," Ahmed said in a statement.
"Our partnership with KIAL allows us to connect key regions domestically while preparing for international operations. Together, we aim to offer reliable, affordable, and efficient travel options to passengers," he said.
The Kerala-based airline received a no-objection certificate from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in July and is currently seeking a flying permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
To begin its services, Air Kerala plans to deploy ATR twin-engine turboprop aircraft for regional operations and gradually transition to narrow-body jets as it expands. Beyond domestic flights, the airline aims to connect Kannur with international destinations, positioning the airport as a key travel hub.
This collaboration with KIAL is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity while laying the groundwork for Air Kerala's ambitious international aspirations.
