India is on its way to achieving significant development in its extensive high-speed train network. Currently, the Mumbai – Ahmedabad bullet train project is under construction. This project is hailed as the foundation for many such projects including vast infrastructure development in India’s rail network. More Indian cities are likely to be connected through the high-speed rail network. Meanwhile, the railway minister told Rajya Sabha recently that the Mumbai – Ahmedabad bullet train is the only highspeed rail project currently approved in the country. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified this while answering the questions related to the project. The much-awaited Mumbai – Ahmadabad bullet train project is 508 kilometres long.
The bullet train project is being developed with technical and financial support from the Japanese government. This route will connect 12 major railway stations like Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Baruch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
Meanwhile, the construction works of the project are progressing at lightning speed. Pier foundations have been completed in the 336-kilometre stretch, and piers have been erected in the 331-kilometre stretch. Besides, girder casting was completed in 260 kilometres, and girder launch was completed in 225 kilometres. The construction of the underwater train tunnel has already begun.
The Railway Ministry has entrusted the National Highspeed Rail Corporation Limited to prepare detailed project reports about potential high-speed rail corridors. Among them are the Delhi – Ahmedabad, Delhi – Varanasi, Delhi – Amritsar and Mumbai – Nagpur.
Limited stop trains
The bullet trains can accelerate up to 320 kilometres per hour. Trains that stop at all the stations in the route and limited stop services would be launched. Limited-stop trains would cover the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in under two hours. Meanwhile, other trains might take up to 2 hours and 45 minutes. There will be 12 stations between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
