Thiruvananthapuram: The indigenously developed Train Collision Avoidance System, also known as Kavach, will be introduced soon on the trains running in Kerala. The project would be first launched here in the 106 km long Shorannur – Ernakulam sector. The railway had invited tender to introduce the Kavach system in 7228 kilometres in various states by spending Rs 2200 crore this year. Kavach, which functions based on radio frequency, alerts loco pilots about the signals to avoid a collision.
The automatic braking system will stop the train if it wrongly crosses the red signal. Out of the country's 68,000 km track network, Kavach offers protection in 1465 kilometres. Meanwhile, installation works in the 3000-kilometre stretch are progressing. The new contract is besides this. Kavach protection has been made mandatory in the routes with automatic signalling. The initial process for automatic signalling in the Shorannur—Ernakulam route is under way.
