Nedumbasserry: In its latest move to increase the security of airport terminals in India, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has instructed airline companies and travel agencies to issue air tickets and boarding cards with QR codes. The new guideline is to prevent people from entering the terminal, posing as passengers. The ministry issued the advisory after it was noticed that people were entering the airport terminals using fake or cancelled tickets lately. Currently, the security officers check the ticket and the ID card produced by the passengers before admitting them into the terminal. However, some people used to enter the airport using fake or cancelled tickets. The QR code reader installed at the gates can easily identify such fake tickets.

More than 90 per cent of domestic passengers travelling via the Cochin International Airport produce air tickets with QR codes. However, the system has not been executed fully in the international terminals as most passengers carry tickets issued by international airline companies. Besides, the code reader here isn’t able to read the QR code on the tickets issued by foreign airline companies or travel agencies. Most international airline companies have instructed their passengers to complete the check-in process online to get boarding passes with QR codes. Meanwhile, DigiYatra passengers do not face such technical issues as they get the QR code online.
