Kerala is experiencing a strong spell of rain and winds, and many tourist spots in the state are closed to ensure safety. Travel ban is also imposed in various parts of Kerala. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in eight districts of the state for Wednesday. The IMD sounded orange alerts in Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts for the day. It also issued a yellow alert in the remaining six districts of the state for the day. An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. The CWC issued warnings about a dangerous rise in water levels of various rivers, including Achankovil in Pathanamthitta and Thodupuzha in Idukki districts of the state. It cautioned people living close to the rivers to be careful.
Here are a few of the restrictions and closures you should know about:
1) The Neriamangalam - Munnar road is closed to tourists. Traffic is also banned on the Gap Road due to mudslides, landslips and heavy rain.
2) Jeep safari banned at Kolukkumalai in Idukki.
3) Ponmudi hill station will stay closed till further notice.
4) Kottayam tourist spots: Entry to Illikkal Kallu, Ilaveezhapoonchira and Marmala waterfalls is restricted until further notice. A night travel ban was imposed on Erattupetta - Wagamon road.
5) Travel ban on DTPC centres in Kozhikode
6) Restrictions in all waterfalls of Palakkad. Prohibitions are also in place at Parambikulam, Attapadi and Nelliyampathi.
7) Restrictions in place on all beaches of Kerala. District authorities have asked to avoid all sea activities and trips to coastal areas.
8) Operations stopped at all trekking spots and adventure parks of Wayanad
9) Ranipuram in Kasaragod will remain closed till further notice.
10) Mahaganithottam eco tourism spot in Kalady, Kochi will be closed for the next three days.
