Mumbai: The construction works of the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport are swiftly progressing. The brand–new airport will be operational by March 31, 2025. Meanwhile, the authorities said that around 63% of the construction has been completed. Interestingly, the airport is designed in the shape of the lotus flower, the national flower of India. The project which is built on a budget of a whopping Rs 16,700 crore is helmed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited. The Adani Group took over the project from the GVK Industries in 2021.
The construction of the new airport at Navi Mumbai began in 2018, to take some pressure off the overcrowded Mumbai International Airport. The project is being developed in four phases, on 1160 acres of land. The authorities aim to make the first two phases operational by March 31, 2025. Meanwhile, the airport will be fully operational by 2032. The levelling of the hills is almost done while the course of the Ulwe River has already been altered for the construction. The swamps have been filled and high transmission lines too are installed here. The construction of the terminals and the runways is in their final stages. Two runways that are 3700 metres long and 60 metres wide are being constructed here.
