These five 'alien' landscapes are on our planet

From the most popular Hollywood hot spot for an 'alien' movie, the Wadi Rum to the Painted Desert in remote Australia, we bring you five places that bring out the extreme nature of our mother earth.  

The Wadi Rum or the Valley of the Moon has been a location for many Hollywood movies. Located 60km off Jordan, Wadi Rum has been home to many human cultures since prehistoric times.

No one knows where the real 'Door to Hell' is or if indeed there one. But this natural gas crater in Turkmenistan is known as The Door to Hell. Located near the Derweze village in the middle of the Karakum Desert, the gas reserve found here was one of the largest in the world. To prevent the spread of gas to the nearby villages, the engineers decided to burn the gas off in 1971. The fire burns still.

Have you watched the 2010 movie Clash of the Titans? The lava lake on Erta Ale was featured in it. Located in the Afar Region in Northeastern Ethiopia, it is an active basaltic shield volcano. The native Afar people are not very friendly, so if you are planning a trip, do it with caution.

Fly Ranch in Washoe County, Nevada is home to Fly Geyser that was accidentally created when they drilled a well in the 1960s. It was formed when a geothermically heated pack of water found a weak spot and began escaping, eventually developing into a fountain.

Not many have explored the South Australian Outback. It is desolate and only a hand full of people have seen these places in real life. The Painted Desert is 120kms away from Coober Pedi. Once a seabed, the land rose and some rocks have eroded away leaving the hills and valleys in a spray of colors - ranging from orange to white.
