The picturesque Paithalmala is often called the ‘Coorg’ or ‘Munnar’ of Kannur, for its cool weather and lush greenery. People flock to this beautiful hill station in the district to enjoy monsoon trekking that unveils the majestic beauty of the mist-laden mountains. Paithalmala or Vaithalmala in local parlance is a scintillating tourist destination that could give Munnar or any other hill station in the state a run for its money. The observation point atop the mountain is the most visited spot which offers a panoramic view of the dense Kodagu forests. The cool weather, refreshing breeze and mesmerizing mountains are the highlights of Paithalmala. Moreover, this is the perfect place to enjoy trekking during the monsoon. Even though the monsoon trek here isn't easy, you will soon forget the hardships as you enjoy the smoky mist and tranquil nature. Interestingly, the Vailthalmala ranges appear in the shape of an elephant from afar.

The dreamy mist changes shape when the wind blows and verdant meadows await the visitors who trek around two kilometres through the forests. You could feel the mist that engulfs you and wraps you in a blanket of cold wind. Even though the number of tourists visiting Paithalmala, which is the highest point in Kannur, is less, it offers an unforgettable experience for those who seek its charm. Meanwhile, there are demands that authorities adopt measures to protect the unique ecology of Paithalmala while arranging infrastructure and trekking facilities to ensure a safe and amazing experience for the visitors. Kannur is blessed with a handful of mountains and other hilly areas; however, Paithalmala deserves special care as it is home to rare flora and fauna.

Here’s how to reach Paithalmala
Visitors should reach Paithalmala in private vehicles as there aren’t too many bus services to the hill station. Those who come from Kannur City and Kasargod could first reach Vanchiyamkavala via Taliparamba, Naduvil and Kudiyanmala by bus. Meanwhile, visitors coming from the Thalassery side could easily reach Paithalmala through Chalode, Sreekandapuram, Naduvil and Kudiyanmala.
