Do you love exploring nature more than curling up on your bed in the monsoon season? If so, this is a wonderful time to head to the Periyar National Park, which is home to majestic mammals like tigers, leopards, elephants, over 260 species of birds and other flora and fauna. It's all green, fresh and airy, the water bodies are full of life and still it's less crowded as it's the monsoon season. If leeches or occasional insects don't bother you, if you trust yourself to stay updated and alert on the rains and if you don't mind being flexible with your plans, here are a few things you can do in the park this season:

Nature walk
In the company of a trained guide who knows the terrain well, you get to check out the plants and animals of the region. If you like birds better, bring binoculars. You might also get to spot some interesting butterflies.

Green walk
You can enjoy a 3 to 4-hour walk either early in the morning or late afternoons. The timing focuses more on the conservation efforts. Brush yourself with the natural history and significance of the area. It's more educational in nature.

Periyar tiger trail
Generally, they are two-day events during which you understand the tiger’s ecosystem, their behaviour and significance. That said, the chance to spot a tiger is not guaranteed as the animals are quite elusive. Still, it can be a rich experience complete with a campfire and can teach you a lot about the animals here.

Bamboo rafting
There is an artificial lake created by the Mullaperiyar Dam, known as the Periyar Lake. Tourists get to experience bamboo rafting here, accompanied by guides and forest officials. You get to spot various animals and also indulge in a short trek after that.

Border trail
This lets you explore the border regions of the park, with tribal people and guides. An 8 to 9-hour trek, and you get to experience both wildlife and the tribal culture via the border trail.
