Wonder Caves: Wayanad's unexplored trekking spot

×

Wayanad is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Kerala. Blessed with nature and mountain ranges, Wayanad will never disappoint tourists as there are so many sights to see and many things to do. And if you love trekking through caves, there is the very famous Edakkal Caves. There is also another cave not so far from Kalpetta town. Though unexplored, Wonder Caves is a beautiful destination for the fervent camper and hiker in you.

Wonder Caves is a hidden gem located in Makkamkunnu shrouded in mist and mystery. This untapped tourist destination consists of hundreds of explored and unexplored connected cave systems formed by oddly shaped boulders that will make your jaw drop.

Wonder Caves is located inside a 5-acre private property owned by Abraham PC. Abraham, who bought this property for an entirely different business, fell in love with the rocks and decided to share them with adventure seekers and nature lovers.

Wonder Caves provides a friendly site for camping, hiking and tenting with a naturally-controlled climate and all that for a nominal cost. If you are a hobby botanist, you must check out the precious herbal plants that tribal healers in the area swear on and can be found aplenty here.

Even if you're not into physical activities, you can unwind by swinging on natural wines reliving your childhood fantasy of swinging like Tarzan or Mowgli.

At Wonder Caves, Abraham has named every boulder with fascinating names linked to its unique shape, such as Bread, Elephant, Dinosaur, Titanic and so on…

You can also take a 700m hike to the topmost point of the property to get a sixty percent visibility of the whole Wayanad district. Abraham claims that there are at least 9-10 viewpoints in his property that can give you mesmerising Instagrammable sights. Along the way, you can observe and play with a kaleidoscope of different butterfly species native to the Western Ghats.

One of the main tourist attractions of Wonder Caves is a cave system that expels the cold air that encircles the whole estate in dew and haze. Abraham calls it Wonder Caves' natural AC plant. Another attraction is the six-level cave system with three exploration pathways that seems to have popped right out of a page of an epic novel.

You can bring your camping materials, or Abraham will provide them. Make sure to book in advance and plan your travel in winter and try to avoid the rains as it could dampen the camping experience. Food is home-cooked; hence no worries on that front. Also, make sure to carry a proper pair of hiking shoes.

If you are visiting Wonder Caves, then don't miss out on their biggest cave structure, where you can easily hike and camp.

How to reach: Wonder Caves is just 30 minutes from Kalpetta town. If you are coming by bus, get down at Kalpetta and hire a cab to Makkamkunnu. The closest airports are Calicut and Kannur airports.
