Karimpin Taste Land restaurant is easy to spot as it is on the side of the main road. It is on the left side just after the Nattakam College in the Kottayam-Changanassery route. There is enough space in front of the restaurant for parking as well.

This restaurant was started around 15 years ago as a makeshift eatery, with a tarpaulin roof, close to the iconic toddy shop in the area. Later, it grew into a fancy restaurant with chic dining areas, individual huts and attractive menus. Now, the Karimpin Taste Land charms the foodies as a modern restaurant that serves some traditional delicacies.

Snakehead fish baked in fresh plantain leaf doesn’t have the overpowering flavours of strong masala or spices. You could taste the real flavour of the fresh fish as well. A whole snakehead is cleaned, scored and is marinated with special marinade. The marinated fish is then fried and kept aside before roasting dried chillies and their in-house masala mix in the same oil. The lightly fried fish is then covered with the roasted masala mix, wrapped in a fresh plantain leaf and is baked to perfection. This dish tastes amazing with soft and fluffy appam or with hot rice as well.

Seer fish and prawns are purchased directly from Neendakara through auction. Meanwhile, all the spice and masala mixes are prepared in – house by the chefs. Freshly prepared coconut oil brought from Kodakara at Thrissur has been used in the kitchen for years.

Freshwater fishes are mostly purchased from Kumarakam, Vaikom and Thannermukkam. The dishes that are required for each day are prepared freshly at this restaurant. Now, chicken biryani, mutton biryani and Palakkad special biryani too are served here following requests from their loyal customers.

The most amazing factor that draws foodies to this restaurant is that they can relish some delicious food, in a safe and comfortable environment, without burning a hole in their pockets.

Those who say ‘no’ to expensive fishes like the pearl spot can try small fishes like mackerel, sardines and kilimeen or pink perch that are prepared in the same marinade. These fish dishes are available from Rs 100 onwards. Two small mackerels or 3 sardines (based on size) are available at this rate here.
