Tawa roti rolls have always lured foodies who love biting into perfectly roasted chicken, neatly rolled inside tawa fried flat bread. In Thrissur, it is the '1983' restaurant which is known for serving mouth-watering tawa rolls that are loaded with flavours.
This quaint restaurant is at the Ikkanda Warrier Road just before it leads to the Jubilee Mission road. The shop which was earlier known as 'Appanpante juicekada' later got a facelift as the 1983 restaurant.
Delicious chicken, beef, and egg mixes are rolled in special flat bread that is cooked on hot tawa. There are vegetarian options as well, with mushroom and paneer fillings. The roti or the flat bread itself tastes amazing as it is prepared using special spices. Some would order this roti separately with chicken or beef dishes. These rolls are extremely popular in north Indian states, especially as a filling snack that could be easily packed for journeys. At 1983, the traditional flavours of Kerala have been ingrained into these rolls to make it unique.
1983 is also a popular shawarma destination in the city where more than 10 different types of shawarmas are served. From the juicy shawarma in which creamy mayonnaise is mixed with the filling to the subtly spicy shawarma made with butter, cheese, and paneer and even the sweet one with chocolate filling.
Shawarma is available from Rs 70 onwards and the price of the most extravagant roll here would not go beyond Rs 130. This has also played a vital role in making 1983 a favourite hub of youngsters. Owners Shyju George and Sibin, who are crazy fans of cricket, had wandered quite a lot looking for excellent cooks who could make delicious and perfectly cooked tawa roti rolls.
Earlier, Anassery George ran his juice shop here. It was then known as Appapante juice kada. However, when the new generation took over the eatery, new dishes, too, came with them. Apart from the rolls and shawarma, hot biryani is also served in the eatery from next month onwards.
The special recipe of the biryani comes from George himself, who was known in the past as a biryani master. Besides fresh juices, mohijots, and cocktails are also available here. On the weekends, the simple yet classy interiors of the 1983 restaurant get filled with music as musicians or even customers come with their guitars and other musical instruments to play music while enjoying delicious food.
