Want to eat your mind’s full at relatively cheap rates while on a trip to Idukki? Walk straight into a homely restaurant, aptly called Veettile Unnu, near Ashoka Kavala.

For just Rs 70, you can have a sumptuous meal that includes chicken/fish delicacies along with the good old payasam. You would be offered a platter of rice along with 20 to 25 varieties of dishes such as chicken stir fry, fish mappas, idiyirachi, and fish peera. A housewife Susheela runs this eat-out. There are also Kudumbashree workers to help her out.

The homely food prepared with the love and care of Idukki natives add a special flavour to the meals. People who have gorged on this sumptuous meal of traditional dishes have only good remarks about this shop.

Susheela on the taste quotient

Susheela swears by the goodness of coconut that lends the distinct Kerala taste to her curries. The masala powders are all prepared at home itself.

Dishes such as Kadala curry and egg curry are prepared by adding roasted coconut. One special Theeyal would be made for almost every lunch. Grated or roasted coconut go into the making of almost every curry.

For a living

The eat-out is adjacent to Susheela's house.

The woman was forced to start the eat-out as she could not find any other means to live. As she could not go for job elsewhere, she started the small hotel next to the house. The shop helped her earn a decent income and along with it gave jobs to seven or eight other women. Depending on the requirement, more people are also called for jobs at the hotel. Both her daughters are married.
