IOC President Thomas Bach had said that the Games might be cancelled if the coronavirus cannot be controlled next year.
The IOC agreed with Japan on Tuesday to the first postponement in the Olympics' 124-year history due to risks from the coronavirus impact.
Bach said the final decision on the Games would not be determined by financial interests. Protecting the health of everyone involved and containing the virus were the main objectives, he added.
Also confirmed for Paris by the IOC executive board were skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. Those three sports will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games next year.
Bach will run unopposed next year for a second term, the IOC said on Tuesday.
