The defeat marks a huge setback for the Congress, as the Bhupesh Baghel-led government, which previously had 68 seats in the 90-member house, has been routed in several of its bastions.
The key candidates of the election are the state's Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel running and BJP's Vijay Baghel from Patan, Deputy CM TS Singh Deo running from Ambikapur and former Chief Minister Raman Singh contesting from Rajnandgaon.
Cong, which is in power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and the BJP, which is ruling MP, are locked in a straight fight in these three states, while the BRS is hoping for a hat-trick in Telangana.
