Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India is making the best efforts to host the Olympics in 2036. Los Angeles and Brisbane will host the 2028 and 2032 editions respectively.

PM Modi made the announcement while inaugurating the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand Tuesday evening. "We are pushing for hosting rights of 2036 Olympics, it will take Indian sports to new heights," PM Modi said.

India has submitted the 'Letter of Intent' to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Future Host Commission, expressing desire to host the mega event. Indonesia, Turkey and Chile have reportedly bid for the event while South Africa and Egypt are among the countries expected to make a push for the Games.

Meanwhile, Modi claimed that sports have become a serious career choice among India's youth. "Sports is no longer an extra curricular activity in India. The youth of the country are treating sports as a prominent career choice." The PM claimed that India's sports budget was three times more than what it was 10 years ago.

The National Games is being held across seven cities in Uttarakhand. Around 10,000 athletes will compete across 32 disciplines in the Games that will run till February 14. Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, P V Sindhu and Manu Bhaker are not competing in the National Games.

Kerala's Kalaripayattu, along with yogasana, mallakhambh and rafting will be demonstration (non-medal) events at the Games.
