Keralite Kiran George secured a hard-fought win over Japan's Yushi Tanaka in his round-of-32 game. Kiran won 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in a battle that lasted 71 minutes. Another Malayali, Treesa Jolly and her doubles partner, Gayatri Gopichand, lost their women's doubles opener 21-23, 19-21 to Arisa Igarashi and Ayako Sakuramoto of Japan.
