Retired hockey great P R Sreejesh made his coaching debut memorable by guiding Junior India to the bronze medal in the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia.

In a thrilling third-place playoff game on Saturday, India defeated New Zealand 3-2 in shootout after the scores were level at 2-2 at full-time with goals coming from Dilraj Singh and Manmeet Singh.

It is incredible how India got the better of New Zealand in hockey on the same day that the men's cricket team suffered a humiliating home defeat in Tests to the Kiwis.

Sreejesh took on the responsibility as head coach of Junior India within weeks of retiring. Under his watch, the young side won three games, drew one and lost another.
